Business rates can be a significant overhead for many companies.  Typically, business rates can be equivalent to approximately 45% of the annual rental value of commercial property, which in the current economic climate may affect the profitability of many companies.

In Scotland the Scottish Assessors Association (SAA) carries out a revaluation of all non-domestic properties every 5 years.

Non-Domestic Rates for the year from 1st April 2017-2018 will normally be calculated by multiplying the new rateable value by 46.6p.  Larger businesses (rateable value in excess of £51,000) will pay a supplement of 2.6p which contributes towards the Small Business Bonus Scheme.

In England and Wales the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) has similarly issued revaluation notices based on market information available.
